History of Zipper

The concept of a fastening mechanism somewhat similar to a zipper appears as early as 1851.Fast forward to 1893, Whitcomb L. Judson is credited with inventing the first device most people would recognize as a zipper.

A Swedish-born engineer named Gideon Sundback joined the Universal Fastener Company in 1906. Sundback’s innovation involved a design with interlocking hooks and a sliding mechanism that addressed the shortcomings of the “Clasp Locker.”

Change of Zipper

Sundback received a patent for his improved design in Germany in 1909, but it wasn’t until 1917 that he secured a patent in the United States for his “Separable Fastener,” which became the foundation for the modern zipper.

The term “zipper” actually came later. The B.F. Goodrich Company used Sundback’s design on a new type of rubber boot in 1923. The ease of fastening with a single “zip” of the hand led them to coin the term “zipper,” which stuck and became the universally recognized name.
